Biographies of Your Executive Members

Mike Walters - President

Mike has been a member of NAFR since retiring from the Canada Border Services Agency in 2006.

Mike's career in the federal service spanned 4 decades starting in Sarnia in 1972 with Customs & Excise following graduation from the University of Windsor. Mike stayed with Customs, retiring as Director of Port Operations, Niagara Falls Ports of Entry. Mike and Brenda live in Dundas and have 2 sons who reside locally.

Mel Matthias - Member-at-large & BackupTreasurer

Mel retired early from Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. [Department of Natural Resources] in 2002, and he was a member of NAFR since 1998.  He frequented the Hamilton Branch social events and got to know many of the Executive then.  He was approached by Maureen & Lou Gansky [past presidents of the Branch] several times to serve as the treasurer, which he accepted in 2010, and enjoys being the trustee for the Branch & members’ funds.  Mel serves on numerous committees with the AECL retirees, the Halton Small Business Advisory Group, numerous churches and the Halton Presbytery. He is an avid reader, consults in many aspects of mediation - dispute resolution & enjoys travelling and occasional sports watching.

Mariette Raybould - Membership

Mariette retired from Employment Insurance in 2008 and immediately joined NAFR, where she was quickly recruited to come into the executive.

In addition to being the membership secretary for the Hamilton Chapter NAFR, Mariette volunteers at a local Long Term Care facility in Ancaster, and is involved with her church as well. As her lifelong passion has been music, she sings in several choirs, and dabbles at playing the piano and the Celtic harp.

Cathy Tarves - Secretary

I worked for CRA as an auditor for 35 years and retired November 1, 2012.  I worked for the Union of Taxation Employees for 34 out of the 35 years.  I held just about every position in the union from Shop Stewart to President.  I was the Treasurer when I left.  I worked on and represented a lot of different Women’s issues for many, many years during that time.  I was also on the Health and Safety Committee and taught CPR for over 10 years.  I have been a single mom for most of my sons 33 years.  I enjoy travelling and have done a lot of it since I retired.  My retirement gift to myself was an 8 week trip to Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii in 2014.   I enjoy helping people and hope that my time with NAFR will help some of my friends that I worked with.  

Shirley Kossowski - Branch Outreach & Marketing Director

Shirley has been a member of NAFR since 1995 and Health Benefits Officer since 2009. Shirley worked for 25 years in several capacities with the Federal Government, the last 19 with the RCMP.   She retired from the government in 1997. After retiring, Shirley took courses and became certified as a hypnotherapist. She started a hypnotherapy practise in 1999.

Shirley enjoys skiing, folk dancing, clogging and quilting. She also volunteers with the Beckett Adult Leisure Centre in Brantford where she is on the Advisory Board in the capacity of treasurer. Shirley also volunteers with the Ontario Folk Dance Association as treasurer.
Shirley is married to Adam and between them they have 4 children and 5 grandchildren.

Gloria Reid - IT Coordinator

Gloria joined Customs & Excise in Toronto in 1972 and enjoyed 23 years working across Canada, 3 years with the Canada Revenue Agency back in Toronto, and then took early retirement in 1998. She then spent 18 years working part-time as a consultant with the International Monetary Fund and has since finally retired full-time.

Gloria has resided in Burlington for many years with her husband Steve and enjoys photography, geneology, travelling with family and friends, and in the last few years, working with several volunteer agencies, including NAFR.
